How did you make the transition from your previous curriculum?
It was an easy transition. The children are so much more involved. For example, with The Three Little Javelinas, the children buy their blocks and go to the Dramatic Play Area to build. While at the Reading Area, children are retelling the story with flannel pieces. At the Art Area, children make javelina masks. At the Science Table, they look at cactuses. Desert books are throughout the room.
What is a typical day in your classroom like?
Very busy! The children are always retelling the stories in many different ways. Its not uncommon to see them selling tickets for the puppet show The Three Blairs or building one of the three little pigss houses out of blocks. There is always lots of talking and laughing!
What changes have you and your staff observed in students since you implemented Read, Play, and Learn!®?
The children are cooperatively involved. They love the stories and are able to retell and sequence them. We never thought we could stay on one story for two weeks, but its hard to move on. They truly become favorites and the children revisit them often.
Do you or the children in your classroom have a favorite storybook module or activity? If so, why do you like it?
The Knight and the Dragon was a favorite. It was a great one to talk about how to get along and solve problems. They enjoy playing in the pizza restaurant. The children were very interested in castles. We made one out of a large box and painted knight, dragon, and princess hats. Fun! We cant see ever going back.
