Sensorimotor Level [more on levels] The children at the sensorimotor level may enjoy putting the stuffing into the socks to make the tails. Entice these children to continue filling the sock until it is full. They can then play with the tail by swinging it or banging it onto a hard surface. (These children will not be able to envision it as a tail.) Functional Level The children at the functional level will begin to associate the costume they create with the picture of the raccoon in the story. You can show the relationship by pointing out the mask and the tail of the raccoon in the story. Symbolic Level Picture charts of the process of making the masks and tails will enable children at this level to practice sequential picture reading. Label the pictures with words as well; and read the words as the process is explained, pointing out what the words say. Involve these children in the design and planning of the tree. Help them to think about what is needed and how the limbs, leaves, and tree can be attached. |
