Create an Animals that Play at Night chart. Find pictures of nocturnal animals in science magazines (e.g., bats, owls, raccoons, opossums, bobcats, mice, hedgehogs). Let the children cut out the pictures and make a chart of Animals that Play at Night.
Replicate the phases of the moon. Let the children experiment with a flashlight and ball. When the light is shone on the ball, it will make a circle of light. When the light is moved across the ball, the light and shadow will change, like the phases of the moon. Document the phases of the moon. Check the newspaper for the phases of the moon. Prior to beginning the unit, the team can cut out moons to match the moons for the month. On the class calendar, you can check the shape of the moon each day, and the children can attach the correct moon shape to the calendar for that day. Discuss why the moon changes shape, and encourage the children to look at the moon each night to watch the shape of the moon change. Make a picture map of the room. Let the children take pictures of the various centers and areas of the room. After school, take the pictures to be developed at a 1-hour photo shop. Have two prints of each picture made. |
