Sensorimotor Level [more on levels] Label all of the foods that are presented for these children. Show pictures of the animals in the book as you discuss them with these children during snack. Use adaptive utensils as needed to assist these children with independent self-help skills. Assist as needed with oral-motor activities for these children, as the ability to control lips, tongue, and jaw are important for eating and for speech. Functional Level All of the points mentioned for children at the sensorimotor level apply to these children as well. Involve the children at this level in conversation through commenting, questioning, informing, demonstrating, and modeling. Expand their language through addition of verbs and descriptions. Have individual children help serve and count each child during snack to increase understanding of one-to-one correspondence. Encourage these children to ask the following: What? Why? How? and Who? Symbolic Level Children at this level can help count out the appropriate number of items needed. In discussions about the food, have the children relate the items to the story. Encourage them to generate questions about the animals, food, homes, and so forth. Share conversations with these children about their experiences with different animals. |
