Sensorimotor Level [more on levels]

The children at this level can make fingerprints on paper with some assistance. The goal is for the children to initiate making marks on the paper. The marks do not need to resemble a paw.

Functional Level

Encourage finger differentiation by showing the children at this level how to make a print with each finger in succession. Let the children experiment with making prints with alternate fingers.

Symbolic Level

Encourage finger differentiation and sequencing in making the paw prints. Have these children count the “fingers” to make sure that their paws have the “same” number as the one in the book.
